Objective: to create a higher level of resourcefulness and confidence

Step 1: Stand Up. Close your eyes and think of a time when you experienced confidence.

Step 2: Scale up the intensity of your feeling from 1 (not very intense) to 10 (very intense). Increase the intensity of the colors, brightness and size of the mental image.

Step 3: Imagine yourself transferring the feeling into an empty spot in front of you, and notice this empty spot taking on the energy patterns of your confident state.

Step 4: Break state.

Step 5: Now, think of a problem that you have that you would like to have more confidence in, anchor this problem using a kinesthetic anchor.

Step 6: While holding the kinesthetic anchor, step into this Circle of Confidence and notice the difference. Allow the intensity of the feeling of confidence to flow back into you while you face your problematic situation.

Usually by this time, the feeling of confidence would be more powerful and allow you to be more empowered in the face of problems.

In testing this, of course, the effectiveness of NLP methods will vary from person to person. If the technique doesn’t work, it’s likely that it’s due to the fact that you are a unique individual who needs unique solutions.

Okay! Let’s get started on a simple lesson on anchoring.

Anchoring basically refers to the process by which we get conditioned to certain behaviors, and there are several kinds of anchors. Any external stimulus could be an anchor, and the key characteristic about an anchor is that when you re-present the anchor, it triggers of the emotional state that was associated with it.

photo credit: A6U571N

The key to anchoring is emotional intensity. Well, think of a moment when you were very excited. Using this emotion, it’s likely you can think of a situation that had that state of excitement. In your mind, you’ve successfully made a link between the state and the event. Now the question is, does it work the other way around? Think of that situation, and realize that it reconnects you with emotions of excitement.

These are basically conditioned responses. However, you can enhance its effects quite easily. All you need to do is to choose something that you’d like to use (something you can see, hear or touch) that you wish to link to the emotional state you desire. If it is something you see, it’s known as a visual anchor and could be a photograph or even an object. If it’s something you hear, it could be a sound, a phrase you say to yourself in your head or even a piece of music. If it’s something you touch or can feel, then it could be a unique feeling of touch that you apply to your arm, or grasping an object. So…

Step 1: Recall with deep intensity your emotional state.

Step 2: Apply the anchor.

Step 3: Clear your mind.

Step 4: Test the anchor.

You’ve successfully created an anchor!

How did this happen in the first place? Well, simply because you were looking, hearing or feeling your anchor at the peak of an intense emotional state. It’s a simple triggered response and all you need to do is to re-introduce the trigger to get back the emotion.

Application

If you need to be charged up, there are certain processes that will allow you to access states of motivation and drive. You could apply this is almost any area in your life.

Generally, I’d advise that anchors are created in order to be more resourceful generally. It’s impossible to create a positive anchor when there is an adverse problem. Instead, preempt this problem and develop resources within yourself so that when such a problem does occur, that you have the inner emotional resources to pull you through

Forgiveness is important as part of natural human functioning because without it, it breeds negativity, sarcasm and the desire to take revenge. We all know that revenge does not work out that well, and with new research, we can tell people who are unable to let go of the past often carry on more than just negative thoughts – it sometimes becomes far more than just a thought. It could manifest in the body as a pain or possibly even a disease. Forgiveness allows an individual to move forward much more easily.

Get into a deep state of relaxation.

As you quieten your mind, travel back to the moment you were hurt.

Step out of that moment, and observe the situation as though you are a bystander (3rd position). This is Image A.

Imagine this image growing like a cancer inside you, the more you see further into the future. Feel the pain and bring it to Image A.

Clear your mind.

Travel to the time you had done wrong to someone who had forgiven you.

Notice the feeling of having been forgiven and anchor this.

Fire off the anchor then travel to the moment of Image A.

Consider the positive intention of the person who hurt/wronged you.

Transmit the sensation of forgiveness into the person in Image A.

Step into this new (forgiven) image A.

Step toward the future and notice a cleansing positive energy being released with each step.

There’s actually a very wide range of NLP Techniques available out there in the world, and they’ve been “invented” by various people in the NLP community. The truth is that once you have mastered the NLP you can develop your own techniques.

At the moment, the best way to utilize NLP techniques is to find a community of practice. All you need are three people to begin with and start off with a Practitioner licensing training program. (To be notified, just register on the top left signup box in my main page)

When you do pick up the skills and techniques, just remember that the most powerful medium is not the face-to-face medium, even though a lot of people can create maximum change through this method. The most powerful in the internet age is to do this in a conversational format without even having the need to touch an individual.

In other words, you need to have a series of practice sessions that hone your linguistic capabilities to their maximum, so you will be able to use that to leverage the change work you are expected to do for your clients.

I like to use Dilts’ SCORE model for the purposes of exploring a person’s issue. This is purely an interview, so you can extract some information about the way an issue has evolved and find the root cause of the problem.

S = Symptoms.

Identify what are current complaints and issues surrounding those complains.

C = root Cause.

Find out what the cause is and identify which level the cause is appearing at. Sometimes the cause is behavioral or a capability issue, but at other times it may be an identity issue.

O = Outcome.

Find out what the intended outcome is. Make sure you seek evidence procedures for the outcome.

R = Resources.

Check what kind of (inner) resources will be required for them to achieve their outcome. Then find ways to activate them.

E = Effect.

What is the long-term effect of the intervention? Are there any variables that are not useful or appropriate as a result of achieving this outcome?

Therefore, whenever you use the approaches in NLP, always make sure you apply them appropriately in a broader perspective.

photo credit: ValetheKid

I’m constantly surprised by the fact that many people have habits they claim they can’t change. The things that are happening in the mind includes:

lack of awareness of the pattern of habit

a belief that the habit cannot be changed

a greater association of pleasure experience that is associated with keeping the habit

pain associated with changing the behavior

no need to change the behavior

possibly positive payoff for a negative behavior

NLP has several processes that enable this to be eliminated including

smoking addiction

snacking

computer game addiction

procrastination

Perhaps I can illustrate this with one of the processes I’ve used since 1997. I had a client once who had asked whether I could help him remove his craving for smoking. Of course, after a series of questions (also clarifying if there were any potential adverse effects of stopping), we went through a simple process of finding out the strongest reasons why he would stop smoking and the strongest desires for him to continue a healthy life.

Essentially, he had been facing some health issues and a few of his friends had died of cancer. So, this was a stark image in his mind that sparked off the fear of death. That formed the leverage for change.

In using a process of submodality mapping across, we made the images of smoking so negative and revolting that he literally wanted to throw up at that point. On the same note, we made the change feel positive in the mind.

Testing this several months later, this person has continued to live without the need of a cigarette, even after more than 20 years of smoking “experience”.

Comments, questions?

Most people who are familiar with NLP are able to put other people into a deep state of relaxation. In order for you to know how to do this effectively, you need to understand the use of the Milton model.

NLP is very commonly associated with rapport building techniques. Well, let’s get some things right – rapport building techiniques were modelled in the therapeutic arena, but can be easily mapped across to other areas in life.

There are several areas to pay attention to. Rapport building is really a process of creating similarity. So, remember this mantra: increase similarities, reduce differences. To test if someone is in rapport with you, you simply need to make yourself slightly different (e.g. change your posture) and you will realize that others are actually “following” you.

The Law Of Similarity is actually the main reason behind this. If you didn’t realize, our body is controlled by the same regions in the brain. If we carried similar postures, we would experience similar feelings and possibly even see similar mental images.

We can create similarity in the following areas:

Posture

Facial expression

Muscular tension

Gestures

Lower lip size

Facial blush

Eye movements

Tone of voice

vocal Inflectional patterns

Predicate patterns (sensory language)

Actually, each of these has a specific training approach to it. We all have representational systems (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) and we tend to interpret the world through our senses. Hence, we need to develop proper calibration skills in order to be better at observing people in order to build similarity in body language, tone of voice and the words we use.

Why am I not surprised that more and more people are feeling pain?

Pain the neck. Pain in the back. Pain in the shoulders. Pain in the wrist. Pain in the knee.

Is it possible for NLP to help one to relieve pain? Well, since there are pain receptors in our brain, and we can manage our brain, it is definitely possible for you to reduce and possibly eliminate pain in your body. One approach you can use is to observe yourself and to test out what it feels like to remove feeling in general. It is possible for you to basically focus and begin to feel that your arm is getting warm or even numb.

In this case, making your arm feel numbness is part of the control mechanism that can make you have the analgesic experience. In the case where you are experiencing muscular pains and aches, it would be also appropriate for you to start exploring your body. Being aware of how your body is positioned, the amount of tension that you experience in your body is important in learning to let go.

For example, I’m even mindful of the sensations in my arm as I type this entire post. It’s uncanny, but I’m also more aware of what will eventually lead up to pain if I keep holdling my body in this position.

Another thing you should do is to learn how to communicate with your “parts”. Here, I mean the psychological parts that you have that form the pain. If your shoulder is experiencing pain, it’s a sure sign that you need to begin to communicate with your pain and start to attend to it by thinking about sensations of softening and relaxation. Become more aware of your muscular tensions and learn how to relax them at will. Often, this takes some getting used to. But by training your body to observe differences between tension and relaxation, you will definitely help yourself reduce the sensations of pain in your body.

In my NLP trainings, one of the things I teach is stress and tension relief. It begins with understanding the body, what causes stress, pain and disease. Then we use some NLP applications to increase our sensations of health in our body. Don’t be surprised when I say that it’s important to recognize every single cell in your body!
